SCOTTEVEST/SeV Scott Jordan Video Blog Post for 4/19/08

Too much to summarized, but had an AWESOME day in Chicago, very much like my favorite movie "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", including:

  • Brunch at new Trump Hotel overlooking Lake Michigan, and downtown
  • Visits with friends from OSU
  • Cubs Game- in Bleachers- beat Pirates like 13-1
  • Many Bars
  • Smoke Daddy's Ribs
Happy Passover. Photo planning session tomorrow. Wish us luck.

BTW, should we do SeV for kids? All my friends with kids think we need to do a line for "tweens" and also just for dads. Thoughts?

Scott

PS: Wore: TEC Shirt, and SeV Leather 4.0

Well, I've been thinking some shirts that are a little more rugged would be nice, like a SeV version of a short sleeve dickies style shirt. I would LOVE to have one of those for work.

I think as far as a "dad" line goes, we'd need to see some ideas for what constitutes "dad" wear. Although being a Dad this idea appeals to me.

Tweens idea is good, but that also means more sizes, more complex inventory management (I'm a supply chain guy). Is tweens = teenage? . . if so then it may be worth a try considering that teenagers have money. The TEV shirt looks great BTW.

Thanks Andrew

Yea, I am thinking about 9-15 year old market; I think they have cellphones and iPods. I think it would be fairly easy to test this market with the hoodie. If we just add 2 more sizes in a single color, we should be able to determine if the market is worthwhile. We already do XS, so I think it wouldn't be too hard to do. Then, just a targeted marketing campaign to our current users to say "Get an SeV for your Kids Now..." If successful, we can do easily in some Tshirts and other Hoodie colors, etc. I hear you about the added SKUs; we are in process of outsourcing our fulfillment, so it would be easier to add there vs at our warehouse.

Test marketing with the hoodie makes sense. If I may suggest, when you do the print/webpage for the tweens, you may consider having the model(s) pose with the TEC hat as well. . .hit two birds with one stone. As for colors, maybe add red and blue to the tweens collection. . .or better yet, check out the tweens clothing section of a Abercrombie and Fitch, American Eagle Outfitters, etc. to see what "colors are in" for this year. Are you going to create a new name for the tweens line?

Great ideas; i passed them on to my designer. Different colors from what we are doing already gets tricky though due to miniums. I think black would do well.

The TEC hat, and perhaps adding some Tshirts would be good too. Do kids wear smaller hats, even if ours are adjustable?

I think a new name would be good. Not sure if "SeV kids" or "SeV/4K" or something like that would be good. Thoughts?

Note sure about sticking the word "kid" in the name of something for kids. I know when I was between 10 and 15, I would've killed for a cool jacket to store my stuff, but if it was named "blah-for-kids", it would've been an instant turn off. I assume the young 'uns now are pretty much the same as we were way back in the old days; we didn't like being treated as kids, even though we knew we were.

Probably any name you choose will have a half-life of about 20 minutes, given the speed of fashion these days. Be prepared to update the website every week with the new name! :-)

Good point Pat.

Scott, while shopping for a birthday present at Toy's R'Us I saw some kids toys around the "spy theme". I did a Google search on Kids, toys, and spy gear and came across http://www.spygear.net/. Aren't there those kids who want to look hip and cool with their Ipods, cellphones, etc. like James Bond, Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

For that matter, the new James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace, is coming out in November. Cool, "spy attire" would be a neat thing to leverage off of in the fourth quarter.

Andrew, that's a great idea re the Bond movie. I loved the last Bond character actor, forgot his name, but the story was very dumb. I hope they do better on the story this time.

We are going to offer the hoodie, hat, and the new fleece for kids soon to test it out. We already have xSmall sizes on these items and if we send an email targeted at dads/moms to buy for their 12-15 year old, I think all we would need is a targeted page, and perhaps a cool looking kid wearing and using their ipod.

I gotta think of a better way of titling these posts so they are easy to keep track of. I really appreciate the input.

Thanks

Andrew, I like the "spy theme" idea.

It needs to be handled subtly. Just hinting at the theme with images and text that uses the right kind of settings and keywords will get the impression across, without embarrasing anyone. Something tacky like "You can be 007!" would appeal to younger kids I think, but not the target market.

Actually, "spy-ready clothing" would have a great adult market too. At least as far as I'm concerned. Though I'm really much more like Q than Bond. :-)

If I may -

As a father to a 3 year old who's getting into music (and watching movies on my portable player while on a plane) I'm always at a loss on how to provide proper sound to him.

Earbuds concern me - he's a bit enthusiastic and would probably crank the volume and most music lovers have seen the stories about hearing loss issues.

Over the ear headsets (which I used this past trip for passover on the plane) are great, but large, a pain to carry around, getting more difficult to find (with the exception of very high end models) and can become a source of frustration (tangled hair in the adjustment feature, not proper sizing, etc.).

There's also the issue of a three foot cord around the kid's neck (and inevitable spats w/ 1 year old kid brother).

For home use we got the little guy a Sansa Shaker (integrated speaker, easy to change tracks, etc.) but for travel it's not a great idea - too loud and only audio.

However, a jacket, or perhaps even Oxford style button-down for more seasonal use (spring, layered in winter, and fall) with little internal 'pockets' near the neck along the shoulder line and a 'fit to size' no power speaker (glorified earbud) could provide sufficient volume for the wearer to hear but not too much for those around.

Throw in an inline volume control along the sleeve or button seam (i.e. parental override) and could be great.

Come to think of it, for non-urban settings (where your danger of bothering someone else is minimal) - running in a park/track by yourself, at the gym when it's not crowded, etc. might be good for adults who don't want to isolate themselves from their surroundings entirely but still want their tunes w/o carrying around a boombox.
