Who is James Coats?
James Coats was born in Miami, Florida August 9th, 1973. His interest in science, nature and the magical world around us, began early. As a child, James’ part Native American mother taught him how to listen and be a part of nature. For years, James had a wild raccoon as a pet. Racky, the raccoon, would sleep curled around James’ head at night. His father taught him about animal behavior and survival skills. James learned how to build underground shelters, tree-houses, and Native American shelters. When James was 15, he built an obstacle endurance course in his back yard that consisted of a ropes course, trapeze, repelling wall and shooting range. The course was so impressive the local ROTC and law enforcement came to train on his course.
No electronic device was safe around James. He would disassemble electronics and recreate them as something new. One summer fan, a tape recorder and an erector set was reconfigured as James’ very own robot.
Christmas morning 1981, James received his first magic set: the Marshall Brodien magic set. He was instantly hooked, and soon began performing magic shows for his friends and family.
Soon after, James’ father lost his job and the family traveled the Southern states so James’ father could find a new job. Nightly magic shows by James, kept the family entertained and united as they traveled from town to town homeless. For 18 months, James’ mother kept him and his sister entertained by visiting local attractions and historical spots. They finally settled in North Central Florida.
James graduated from high school in 1992. He worked his way through College and completed his Associates of Art Degree in 1998. During his studies became fascinated with science and took every class he could while attending the University of Florida for Micro Biology and Marketing. While attending UF, James also developed his magic act.
During his education at University of Florida, James created a new magic effect called, Mind Bender: a metal spoon that appeared to bend with the power of the mind. The magic world took notice, and in 1999, James was asked to head up one of the largest magic manufacturing and consulting companies in the world.
Since 2003, James has consulted and lent his name to some of the largest names in the entertainment industry: Disney, Coca Cola, Sharpie, Universal Studios, Siegfried and Roy, Lance Burton, BAE Systems and the USMC.
James was instrumental in redeveloping an old form of magic called, Pickpocket Magic. Pickpocket magic utilizes misdirection used by street pickpockets and creates it into a form of magic to amaze and entertain. James interviewed actual street pickpockets to learn their secrets. Then, James teamed up with state, government, and local law enforcement agencies to teach pickpocket and travel scam prevention. James impressed people with his skill and finesse and was soon featured in his own 1-hour national TV special.
James was a natural in front of the camera and was soon featured in his own TV series: Magic World as well as his own radio talk show. James wanted to utilize his diverse background to inspire, educate, and entertain. Presently, James is working with producers of the History Channel on his new television series titled, History’s Secret Spaces, and has his own government and military technology consulting company www.shadowconsultingllc.com.
