More airport advertising

Should we do this?

I am trying to contact the Marketing Department.<div><br></div><div>I recently saw a video of Scott talking about advertising on the security bins in Wichita. I wanted to introduce the concept of advertising on the baggage carousel. I have taken the liberty of attaching a rendering as I think this would be a great location for the ads. The nice thing about baggage carousel advertising is that your ads will be seen several times with an average wait at the carousel of 17+ minutes.</div>

Which URL should we use for our airport bin advertising?

Hi everyone.  We need your advice.  For our airport bin advertising program, we are currently using a unique URL to measure the results and one that is shorter than our full URL, www.scottevest.com.

The one we are using now is:  GetSeV.com (please don't click on it) and it is doing VERY well so far.  But it occurred to me that the following URL may be easier to remember: AirportBin.com, although it does not refer to our brand.  My gut tells me that AirportBin.com would be easier to remember and thus result in more sales.  On the other hand, GetSeV.com is working now and refers to our brand.

We will likely do some A/B tests with some bins having one URL and the other having another URL.

If you have an option, please share it.

Here's the video explaining the airport bin stuff, in case you missed it.

Effect of Advertising on our Future: As of Today, our Future has Changed

This weekend proved to be one of the busiest in SeV history solely as a result of the attached NY Times ad and our airport bin advertising.   We have done very little advertising since SCOTTEVEST was formed 9 years ago, until some recent experiments in Men's Journal, Esquire, and Bluff (a poker magazine).  All of these other ads (except Esquire) were successful and paid for themselves over a period of a month, and encourages us to continue experimenting with ads.  However, yesterday's ad in the NY Times Style magazine exceeded our wildest expectations.  In one single day, it paid for itself, and all the products sold during that day!  The good news is that I expect sales to continue from that magazine throughout this week and month, as people will continue to refer to this magazine for throughout the month, and perhaps even longer.

At the same time, this weekend, our airport bin advertising started as well. In just one short weekend, the bin advertising almost paid for itself.

This is incredible news.  For 9+ years now, I have relied solely on word of mouth, bloggers, and media to spread the word, and have never before found a way to spend money to make money.  This has been VERY frustrating as I could not identify a key message or medium to convey that message that would impact our business.  We grew by 20-40% annually over the years anyway, despite the economy anyway.  Now, with our new travel messaging and website, implemented as of last October, the game has changed completely!

Check out this link showing a comparison of our closest competitors for travel clothing, Ex Officio and Tilley Endurables:

http://siteanalytics.compete.com/scottevest.com+exofficio.com+tilley.com/

Well, what does this all mean?  We will be doing much more advertising, especially a focus on travel related titles.  Also, we will start rolling out our airport bin advertising nationally, and likely internationally in the near future.  You will not be able to fly without seeing ads for SeV products in the bins, and soon thereafter throughout the airport, and perhaps our our store in every airport.

We will be expanding our line in the fall to include some 20 new products or so.  Our biggest problem will be keeping inventory in stock. Prior to discovering effective advertising our sales on average have been 170% of prior years sales, that's almost 3 times as much as last year, which was our best year yet.  And yet most people were not aware of our brand.  Most of these sales were being driving by our existing customer base and their friends.  Now, with the benefit of a clear message, "Travel Clothing for the Trip of Your Life" - We Make Your Travel Experience Easier and Save You Money, I believe there is no limit to our growth aside from inventory and our infrastructure.

We are now looking for several key individuals to help us grow our company to reach its potential, starting top down with a qualified COO/President who has proven experience with a fast growing direct to consumer company. If you know anyone that fits that bill, please have them send me their resume scott@scottevest.com.

Sit tight, we are about to take a serious ride. I believe by this time next year SCOTTEVEST will be a household name!  Thanks for all your support over the years.

Sincerely,

Scott

NY Times Ad shown attached and KICKING serious butt!

Practically paid for itself in 1/2 a day. If this holds up, be prepared to see SeV ads EVERYWHERE relevant soon. This is huge!

Some stats:
conversion rate: 22.56%
over 50% of today's transactions as a result of this ad
Bounce Rate, 70% lower than site average
Time on Site: 9:50 seconds, 148% higher than site avg
Pages per visit: 11.23, 148% higher than site avg
New Visitors: 82%, 33% higher than normal.

This is repeatable!  Yea!

Also, the airport bin ads are paying off already too.

Rock and roll.

Travel vest is like bonus carry-on

Joseph may have had a coat of many colors.

Mark Hinds has a vest of many pockets.

So many pockets, that the Sioux City resident doesn't need a carry-on when he travels by plane.

Hinds is the owner of a Scottevest, a garment that was initiated in 2000 by Scott Jordan. The vest is designed with travelers in mind, with every one of its 25 concealed pockets having a purpose.

About three years ago, Hinds was in an airport and saw a man wearing the vest.

"What caught my eye was when he opened the vest and a clear pocket was visible," he said. "I asked him about it and he told me it was ideal to travel."

Hinds immediately logged on to the Web site, scottevest.com, and ordered one in a black lava color.

"It's the ease it provides," when asked of the vest's appeal. "You don't have to open a carry-on to display anything. You just take it off."

To demonstrate how the vest might replace a carry-on, Hinds unloaded the contents of the vest he was wearing. Out of the pockets came keys, passport, pens, camera, a writing pad, iPod, sunglasses, a complete Sioux City Journal and a bottle of hand sanitizer.

"Missing today is a bottle of water, my e-reader and a laptop," he apologized. "I typically have those as well."

If Hinds was actually traveling, he would include a toothbrush, razor and maybe some clothing necessities.

"Really, it's very comfortable," he said of the mico-fiber material. "And the weight is distributed quite well. It beats carrying a heavy bag on your shoulder."

Even looking at the outerwear, one would be hard-pressed to believe there was that much stuff crammed into the pockets of Hinds' vest.

"That's another plus," he said. "It doesn't look like you're carrying anything."

A self-professed geek/nerd whose background is accounting and information technology, Hinds also liked the ability to be plugged in.

"The ear-bud and head-set cable don’t come with the vest," he clarified while showing off the additions to the collar. "The vest just has a number of channels, openings and tabs that allow you to custom mount your own. In fact, at any given moment, I could have as many as three plug-ins."

Remember the transparent pocket that first caught Hinds' eye? There are actually two -- one on each side of the vest,

"That's another thing I really like," he said. "I use them for my BlackBerry/phone on one side, my iPod on the other. I can control my BlackBerry just by pushing the keys while it's still in the pocket."

But what about the water bottle and toiletries?

"There's an elastic band that will hold the bottle secure and a secure zip for the toiletries just in case they would leak," he said. "There are pockets within pockets in this."

Just like that original traveler, Hinds has been asked about his own garment.

"Every time I travel, someone asks about it, especially if I open it and they see those clear pockets," he said.

Going through airport security, Hinds has only been questioned once about the contents of the vest.

"I had bought a brass change tray as a souvenir and it showed up as something unusual," he said. "But I think airport security people are used to seeing this type of vest and in Europe, it's very popular."

    Hello Scottevest,

My name is Donald Posey.  I’ve recently returned from a three week trip to the country of Myanmar (Burma).  I am a vocational missionary.  On this trip I took my newly purchased Essential Travel Jacket with me and it performed wonderfully.  It carried my electronic gadgets, it insulating me from the cool Burmese morning air and it served as a dust filter to breath through on an 11 hour cross country taxi ride.  I couldn’t ask it to serve me any better.

Thanks for making such a functional and durable garment.

The attached pictures are of me wearing my “Essential” jacket at the Success Pagoda in the city of Myitkyina, Myanmar.  Please feel free to use them as you see fit.

    Regards,
    Donald Posey

Why I love our customers so much!!

    From: "John \"Decker\" Pool"
    Date: March 25, 2010 4:28:46 PM MDT
    To: scott@scottevest.com

I just want to say thank you for your awesome products. For me, it
started with a T-shirt that I bought off Thinkgeek. Maybe 6 months
after that, I found myself in need of something warmer for Fall and I
picked up the microfleece hoodie from your website. It took me weeks
to discover all of the pockets in it. During your anniversary sale, I
picked up few pair of pants, the ball cap (the first cap that I ever
    purchased), and another shirt.

Each and every time, I get something new, I spend days checking them
out, finding every pocket I can and all of the little features that
are included, but without fail there is always some pockets and some
little features which escape me until later.  With every single
purchase so far, I find myself impressed with the level of thought and
    practicality put into the design.

I also appreciate the level of comunication you and your company
provides to it's customers and I am thrilled to see your business
taking off so well as it seems to be.

Thanks for all of the great clothes so far! I can't wait to see what is next. :)
