Gear Clothing Review: the SCOTTEVEST Outback Men’s Jacket

Here at Gear Diary we love (LOVE!!) our SCOTTEVEST clothing. A few weeks ago Judie gave a sneak peek at some of the new items SeV would be releasing this fall and now we have some of them in hand. First up… the new SCOTTEVEST Outback men’s jacket. The machine washable jacket comes in Dark Olive with a Dark Brown Corduroy collar and, as is always the case with SeV clothing, offers a host of different pockets.

The Outback is great for travel and gadget-heads but was specially designed for undercover law enforcement. I’m about as far from that as you can get but I still love the jacket. Let’s take a look…

From SCOTTEVEST-

Whether you are undercover law enforcement, carry concealed, or just appreciate a good balance of ruggedness and refinement in your jackets, the SeV Outback is worth checking out. We have arranged 20 pockets throughout the jacket to optimize carrying capacity, and engineered our NoBulge™ pockets not to print or sag. The Outback includes the TravelSmartSystem™ of travel-oriented pockets (for passport, tickets, cell phones, etc.), but we have also added specialized CCW and LEO-requested features, including:

Patented Personal Area Network (PAN) – initially designed to help manage the wires for consumer electronic headphones, the PAN has been modified on the Outback to also accommodate sleeve mics secured by elastic loops

A magnetic front flap and rapid access side zippers open to help you reach your holstered firearm faster

Soft-side hook-and-loop panels inside handwarmer pockets for attaching firearms accessories like magazine pouches and pocket holsters. Also features elastic loops for holding water bottles, radios, mags, flashlights, folders, multi-tools, GPS or anything else that fits comfortably

Small counter-weight pockets sewn into the bottom of the handwarmer pockets to aid drawstroke (add coins for weight)

Concealed hideaway key pocket accessed via quiet micro-snaps

Large interior PadPocket™ was designed to hold an iPad® in sizes M & up, but works great as a dump pouch, large notepad/document storage, place to carry flex-cuffs, or storage for your IFAK/Blow-out kit

A lightly quilted interior makes this jacket appropriate for cooler weather, and its multitude of pockets make it perfect for travel. The exterior appearance will help you blend into a crowd, and despite its integrated tactical features, it does not scream tactical. Made of water-proof, breathable, Teflon®-treated K-Fusion® fabric; it’s not a raincoat, but it will keep you dry. The Outback CCW Jacket is available in Dark Olive with a Dark Brown Corduroy collar, and is machine washable. Holster your pistol, carry everything else in your SeV Outback.

With this fall’s new offerings SCOTTEVEST no longer puts cards in each pocket that identify what the pocket is for. Long-time SCOTTEVEST fans may be saddened by this classic SeV aspect going by the wayside but, personally, I applaud the change. So how do you know what each pocket is designed to do? On the SeV site there is an “x-ray map” of the jacket. It reveals just how many pockets the Outback offers; 20 in all.

And just in case you were wondering… yes, the Outback is designed to fit an iPad in one of its interior pockets.

One of the things that quickly becomes clear when you try to review one of SEV’s offerings is that photographs and text really doesn’t do the garments justice. To REALLY get a feel for what the Outback offers video is a far better medium, so…

In short… I love this jacket.

Here is a closeup of the corduroy collar…

Again, it is worth noting that while this jacket looks less like an SeV jacket than most it offers all the typical SeV features and then some. The result is a jacket that is warm, super-comfortable and highly functional. Sure, it was designed with law enforcement in mind, but you don’t have to be part of that elite community to appreciate the Outback.

The SCOTTEVEST Outback Jacket is available directly from the SCOTTEVEST Website.

MSRP: $150

What I Like: Amazingly comfortable; tons of well-thought out pockets; outwardly looks like a rough and tumble barn coat; inside it is 100% SeV; machine washable; special features for law enforcement; machine washable; quality materials and build

What Needs Improvement: Teflon-coated but not waterproofScott
