No Baggage Challenge

SCOTTEVEST No Baggage Theme song by Ed McKendry

THE SCOTTEVEST NO BAGGAGE CHALLENGE

A New No Baggage Challenge Video Contest, as seen on Fox Business News with Neil Cavuto

Following the success of the first SCOTTEVEST No Baggage Challenge, it became apparent that there are still many more countries, ideas and perspectives to explore. With that in mind, we want to invite you to enter a video contest proposing how you would do a No Baggage Challenge.

The Prize: Win Rolf's outfit (Tropical JacketQ-Zipand your choice of SeV pants) plus a $500 air travel voucher. And since we're looking for someone to take the N.B.C. baton from Rolf and keep running with it, consider your entry a first audition for the next No Baggage Challenge. Watch video from Rolf's journey here.

The Rules

  • Record a 5 minute or less video explaining what you would do on your very own No Baggage Challenge. It does not need to be as extensive as Rolf's in days, miles or concept. We've kicked around ideas about doing a one-week wilderness/survival N.B.C., a 50-states-in-25-days N.B.C. and several other ideas, so the sky is the limit.
  • Some questions to get you started: Where would you go? How long would it take? What would you bring? What challenges do you foresee? How would you overcome them? What special skills and perspectives do you bring to the table? How would you document this (writing/blogging, video, music, photos)? Is this something that you could realistically take time from work to accomplish? Any of these questions are fair game, but don't feel limited by them. Basically, what would make your No Baggage Challenge informative, enjoyable and compelling to follow?
  • Post your video to YouTube, with "SCOTTEVEST No Baggage Challenge Entry" in the tags and description, and a link back to www.NoBaggageChallenge.com. Mark it as a response to this video and after you post it, send an email tonobaggagechallenge@scottevest.com with your full name and a link to the video, along with anything else you think might influence our decision. (By this, we mean something like a short note or travel photos, not a bribe! ;) )
  • Because this contest requires both creativity and a filmed performance, we want to give you some time to bring your A game and will not start judging until November 1, 2010. Based on the number and quality of entries, we may take awhile to decide. A winner will be announced before December 1, 2010.

#3 ROLF POTTS / NO BAGGAGE CHALLENGE

Why has he made the list?

25 Most Inspiring Travel Bloggers In 2010 As We Travel Blog Sofia von Porat Nathan SchachererRolf Potts recently got back from spending 6 weeks around the world without any baggage – The No Baggage Challenge. On this new blog he shares videos and proves that you don’t need a 60L+ and heaps of gear to be able to travel – less is more.

This is so close to our mindset, the no-excuse way of travel and with so many excuses out there for WHY people can’t travel, it’s great that someone stepped up and did this – even if the trip was funded by high-profile travel companies.

Important - Really need your advice on FINAL Catalog Covers

OK, there are the final front/back of our catalogs. There are 2 versions: Fan Version and Xray Version.  I desperately need your advice on which version to send.  In sum, we are sending out a TON via mail in early November. This costs a lot of money.  The goal here is to ensure people don't throw away the catalog and open it. Thus it needs to be very inviting, interesting, etc.  The other version will be enclosed when people order a product or specifically request a catalog, and thus it need not be as compelling as the one we are mailing.  So the question is: Which version is more compelling and thus should be mailed, the Fan Version or the Xray Version?

Delta continues to threaten to sue SCOTTEVEST despite changes made to the contest to make abundantly clear Delta was not involved

Please read bottom up for an update on this situation. In sum, I believed that the changed we made to our contest page per Delta's original threat were sufficient to put this matter to rest, http://www.scottevest.com/company/carry-on_contest.shtml.  Apparantly, Delta did not think so.  In my effort for complete transparency, see the most recent correspondence below, reading bottom up.

Hi Chloe and Meloney,

I have reviewed your email with my counsel.

If I understand your issue now it is that certain statements contained in my video contradict other information contained in the page itself and thus is misleading.  After recording that video upon receipt of your letter, I decided that the winner of the contest should not be limited to airlines other than Delta but rather they will be able to select any airlines that AMEX points can be redeemed for, including Delta.  We have informed the winner of this, and they were very happy with this decision.  For your information, the winner (nor anyone viewing the website to my knowledge) believed that Delta had anything whatsoever to do with the contest.

I plan to record another video shortly making this minor point clear, and will post it to the webpage in issue, together with this correspondence.  In the meantime, I don't believe that any reasonable person viewing this webpage can come to the conclusion that Delta has sponsored or was involved in this contest in any manner as your original letter claimed, nor do I believe the information contained thereon is misleading in any material respects.  Thus, I don't believe your claim of misuse of Delta's trademark has any validity whatsoever.

On the advice of counsel, we believe that we may use Frequent Flyer points transferred from AMEX for contests, or any other legal purpose, so long as make it clear that Delta and the other airlines (and AMEX) are not sponsoring any of these contests.  We believe that we are within our legal rights to give away anything we own so long as we make it abundantly clear, as we have done in this case, that Delta and others are not sponsoring, etc., the contest.  If you have any direct statute or case law to the contrary, I would appreciate seeing the reference so that I can better appreciate your position.

In the absence of such direct reference, we view this matter as concluded.  Please know, however, that we will vigorously defend our rights.  Please note that the address you have on file is not accurate.  Any notices should be sent to:

Thanks for your time and attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Dear Scott,

Thank you for your email.

We note that you have included a disclaimer in the www.scottevest.com website content which reads, "*Trademarks of any third-party companies mentioned on this site are property of those respective companies, and no endorsement or ownership is either implied or shall be inferred."

The main image at the top of your website continues to read: "WHAT'S IN YOUR SCOTTEVEST CARRY-ON CONTEST  Tell us what you would carry in your SeV to save money on baggage fees, & pocket the savings  Winner Gets Free U.S. Domestic Flight on Delta* and SeV Carry-On Coat".

You have also posted website content, however, which states that the contest prize will no longer be frequent flyer miles applicable to flights served by Delta. In your video blog post, you state, "So we're trying to figure out you know what to do with the contest, whether we just you know give money for a flight, give frequent flyer miles to another airline, we are in the process of contacting Southwest to see if they want to sponsor the contest. I want to apologize most sincerely because it's not my intent to change the contest rules in the middle of the contest..."

Regardless of the propriety of your use of Delta's trademarks in the first instance, since you no longer intend to offer a flight serviced by Delta as the prize for the contest, your use of the DELTA name and mark in connection with the contest continues to be misleading and constitutes a misuse and an unauthorized use of the DELTA mark, which violates Delta's rights in its trademarks and intellectual property. We therefore must insist that you remove any use of the DELTA name and mark in connection with this contest from your website.

Best regards,
Chloe

Gear Clothing Review- SCOTTEVEST Revolution Plus

Last year I all but lived in my SCOTTEVEST Evolution Jacket during CES 2010. The Evolution was perfect. As a jacket it was great for the early morning chill in Vegas and since it was from SCOTTEVEST it held a ton of gear. As the day heated up the zip-off sleeves converted the Evolution into a vest that still carried all my stuff. (Now it even carried… the sleeves!) It was great! (Hint: I bought mine when it was on sale on the SCOTTEVEST Sale Page. It is worth checking regularly as the sale item changes constantly.)

When the Evolution was discontinued some time later I was a bit bummed. I did, however, figure that something bigger and better was coming along to fill its place. I was right! This fall saw the release of the SeV Revolution Plus. The Revolution Plus has a similar look the the Evolution, offers tons of pockets (26) and the same removable sleeves. The Revolution Plus however is “the warmest SeV ever”. As such, it is not only the successor of the Evolution but it is the replacement of the Signature System. (More on that in a bit.)

I’ve had one here for a few weeks now so let’s take a look.

From SCOTTEVEST-

There was a time not too long ago when the best thing on a cold day was a hot bowl of soup… but that changed when we introduced the SeV Revolution Plus! Featuring a quilted interior, this is the warmest SeV ever. We did not compromise on any of the features you’ve come to expect: the Revolution Plus earns its bold name by concealing 26 pockets, our patented Personal Area Network (PAN), removable sleeves and a hood, all within a waterproof and breathable shell material with sealed seams. Now you can travel from vehicle to office, store to store, or even Nome, Alaska to Reykjavik all in the same stylish winter jacket.

The Revolution Plus is ideal for the winter traveler, since its multitude of pockets allow it to replace (or supplement) your carry-on while traveling, and then function as a very capable ski/snowboard jacket upon arrival. If the high-altitude sun makes things a little too warm – or if you realize you overdid it on the layering – the sleeves zip off and can be stored in one of the Rev+’s generous pockets. Because this is a jacket, it is not subject to airline rules and regulations no matter how many souvenirs you fill it with; extra bag and carry-on fees never apply to SCOTTEVESTs.

As with all SeVs, the Revolution Plus utilizes our Weight Management System with NoBulge™ pocket design to conceal the contents of your pockets, combining classic SeV features with our latest innovations. A PadPocket™ to accommodate an iPad (in sizes M and up), clear touch interior pockets (so you can see and control your iPod®/iTouch®/iPhone® right through the cloth) and our TravelSmartSystem™ of travel-oriented pockets are all built into the design. Other features include our patented Personal Area Network (PAN), secure travel document compartments, and pockets for everyday items like digital cameras, cell phones, GPS units, flashlights, change and glasses. Discreet graphic labels on some of the pockets offer suggested uses, so you don’t forget where you put things. Make winter travel easy with the new SeV Revolution Plus! The Revolution Plus Jacket is available in Black and is made of a waterproof material with sealed seams.

I loved the Evolution. It was a great jacket when it wasn’t too cold outside. (I still like it and was wearing it just the other day!) For cold weather, however, the Revolution Plus is a winner. It has a huge number of well-thought out pockets, it is incredibly comfortable and it is WARM!!!! The day I took the above picture it was freezing cold inPennsylvania. My head was feeling the temparature but my body was nice and toasty in the Revolution Plus. That’s because the Revolution Plus’ quilted lining makes it “the warmest SeV ever!”.

I have the SeV Signature System of a Quantum Jacket and a 5.0 Fleece thanks to Judie and last year’s SeV Holiday Season. (Now discontinued.) It is great, although the two piece system can be cumbersome and the $340 combo price was rather steep. And while I have not done a warmth comparison between the Signature System and the Revolution Plus I would put money on this new jacket being warmer than the two pieces it replaces. The Revolution Plus certainly is more convenient since it is a single piece and at $200 it is significantly less than the “warm-end product” it replaces.

Like the SeV Outback I recently reviewed, the Revolution Plus marks the next phase in the ten year-old SCOTTEVEST line. It looks a bit more refined than prior generations of SeV jackets but has even more features that make it great for both tech-aholics and travelers alike. And yes, it does hold enough that it can serve as a carry-on! :) (This video shows just how much it can hold.)

Let’s face it though, pictures and words can’t really give a sense of what a jacket lik
