RISE #131: The Inspirational Story Of ScotteVest: How Scott Jordan Went From Attorney To Entrepreneurial Clothing Sensation

I just love stories like this one.

Scott JordanScott Jordan was a successful attorney, but he was looking for something more. Something better, something more fulfilling, and something freakin’ fun. So he came up with a neat idea for a really geeky vest to hold everything you could possibly need (or not need), including maybe a small dinosaur.

Fast forward 10 years later. Now Scott Jordan is leading a multi-million dollar brand, Scottevest, and he is the visible face of the company (while running it VERY transparently…and I mean very). He is having a blast and is more than an entrepreneur. He is a leader.

Here is a little off his Wikipedia page:

Scott Jordan is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of SeV. Before founding SeV, Scott practiced real estate and corporate law with Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP, an international law firm with over 600 attorneys, and DLA Piper, a international law firm with over 3200 attorneys worldwide. Scott received his Juris Doctor (Summa Cum Laude and Order of the Coif) from Case Western Reserve University College of Law in May of 1992. He published a law review article cited by several Federal Appellate Courts. But the law bored Scott; he was always an entrepreneur at heart. He received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from The Ohio State University majoring in Entrepreneurship. He started Images Calendar Line while at OSU (and then went into a family business). As a result of Scott’s accomplishments with SeV, he has been written about extensively, including several articles in the Wall Street Journal and New York Times (among many other magazines and newspapers and several college textbooks, Scott has since been featured in many TV shows, including the CNBC’s hit show The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch, Fine Livng Network’s Radical Sabbatical, as well as Japan’s hit show, The World’s Most Successful People).

I invited Scott on to tell his story to inspire all of us. How did he do it? How did he rise to the top? And what can we learn from it? And trust me, there are LOTS of lessons in here.

In this interview, you will learn from Scott:

  • Where his idea came from and the first steps to get it going.
  • How much it cost to get rolling and where he came up with the money.
  • The driving force behind his success and how you can jump on it as well.
  • How he brought in the customers.
  • How he operates the company.
  • How many people does it take (spoiler alert: nowhere near the amount I thought!).
  • His keys to marketing and promoting (and what PR has done for them).
  • You say you run your business very transparently. What does that mean?
  • Why he decided to film himself all day (hilarious).
  • …plus much, much, much more.

As always, would love to hear your thoughts, takeaways, and big ideas.
