SeV Launches New Website-Secret Sale Save up to 60% Off One Week Only-Help us Find the Bugs! Perfect Father’s Day Gift

We have tons to report. You can either read this boring email or you can watch a short video on YouTube or on Blip.tv (better quality) explaining how the sale works.

So, you ask, why are we having a secret sale now? Good question. Three (3) reasons:

(1) We just launched our new website. I think you will find the new site to be MUCH better and easier to use. However, we are still working out the kinks. So, we decided to enlist your help in debugging the site.

(2) We have outgrown (more than 2347% growth rate thanks to you) our warehouse in Ketchum, Idaho and are moving our fulfillment to Chicago (HQ will remain here). Anything we sell now we don’t have to ship to Chicago, so we wanted to pass on the savings to our loyal customers. During the move (after the sale), shipping will be suspended for about a week, so now is the time to stock up if you think you will need any SeV’s. More details on this will be posted on the site, and we will notify you.

(3) Father’s Day and Graduation is fast approaching and SeV’s make great gifts! And, if you don’t order one now, due to reason 2 above, Dad won’t get one in time.

How does the sale work? I never thought you would ask.

Since we are asking you for something, we wanted to give you a secret coupon code (“NEWSITE”), which will save you 20% off ANYTHING, including the already super reduced Sale Items, giving you an effective savings of 60% off the Sale Items. Some examples of the deals on the Sale Items are shown below. Note that supplies are truly limited here, especially on the Sale stuff, so please don’t wait to place your order.

So, what do what do we have to do to earn such great savings? Well, other than enter the coupon code (“NEWSITE”) in the coupon code box at checkout, nothing is required, BUT we ask that if you find any errors on the website, you let us know either via email (errors@scottevest.com) or preferably by posting your errors to our blog here. Screenshots or complete explanations are preferred. Please do not call us as we are busy packing up for the big move.

We really appreciate your help. Note that there are many missing videos (they are coming soon). Let me know if load times are high, if things don’t appear right, typographical stuff, etc.

As always, the fine print:

· Use Coupon Code “NEWSITE” at checkout (right under where you select shipping method) to get the price reduction

  • · This is only for newsletter subscribers and prior customers, but we have no way of policing this –so the honor code is in effect. There will be no mention of the sale on the site.
  • · Not valid with prior purchases
  • · The Sale Items are FINAL-no returns or exchanges. All other items can be returned/exchanged per our policy.
  • · Sizes are selling out FAST and will not be replenished. Only while supplies last.
  • · Sale ends Tuesday, June 10 at midnight, in your time zone. NO EXTENSIONS.
  • · Our $5 Ground Shipping is still in effect for Continental U.S. Orders. (we may have to increase this once we move)

BTW, any Illinois residents will want take advantage of this sale. Once we move to Chicago, we will have to start charging Illinois sales taxes of 8.5%.

I could go into all the news, e.g., LA Times featured SeV, etc., but I think I am on the limit of how much time you have to read this. Just check out our blog for news. If you do have 3 more minutes though, please check out our new video on the Travel Vest here. It is really slick. More videos like this are coming soon, so check back often.

Your loyalty means a lot to us! Thanks again for your continued support!

Sincerely,

Scott

On the page New_Travel_Vest_Women, the link to the Women's Essential Jacket shows a price of $60, while clicking on any link in that area brings one to the Women's Essential Jacket page, where the price is listed as $120. Given that the Travel Vest is marketed at $100, I'm presuming that the $60 on the Vest page is the error, rather than the $120 on the page Essential_Jacket_Women? I do have a screencap, but don't see a place to upload it via blog comments.

thanks; that was an error; we are fixing it now. We REALLY appreciate your help.

From the main menu on the left. All of the sub menu items under "Shop By Lifestyle" load the same page. It shows Travel vest, Evolution Jacket, and Ultimate Hoodie Microfleece.

Chris, you rock; Thanks for pointing this out. We r on it.

Chris, what browser he is in? I just checked these again and they work correctly in IE7 and FF.

I used FF. I will try it again when I get home. I have multiple systems and multiple OS's there. Last time I tried was from my office and I was behind a proxy. That may have caused the issue. Will let you know.

Hi guys,

Love the new website but wondering if the move to Chicago will reduce the overseas shipping costs a little bit? I've been wanting to purchase the hidden cargo pants for years now but can't justify $100 in shipping for a $60 pair of trousers.

But congrats on the new website and the move.

When placing an order there appears to be a drop down box missing for "How did you hear about us?" This is on page "3 Shipping & Payment Options" of the shopping cart. There is a text box to fill in Catalog Code/Other and a heading for the drop down but no list to select anything else as it seems should be there.

Colors: Essential_Jacket_Women: When I clicked on the color wheel in the Colors button, the load got hung at about 75% until I moved the mouse off the button (Firefox browser). This, of course, only happened the first time I tried this and not subsequently, nor in IE7).
Expectation: also for the same page, when I clicked on the black colors button, I expected the black color to be first when the re-load happened, but the white one was in front. I realize that the entire colors button is one button, but my expectation was that the color I clicked on would be the feature color. Also, the order of the colors on the button (black, red, white) isn't the same as the order of the colors in the picture (black, white, red).

Inconsistency: when you click on the links on the left hand side (Jackets & Vests), all the stuff in the dropdown appears on the screen, EXCEPT for Gift Ideas (the Gift Certificates don't appear)and Women's Collection (the unisex items don't appear). Also, under that unisex heading, are the men's cargo pants really OK for women? I would have my doubts....the only real unisex item you have there is the hat and you could have added the TWiT hat there as well.

Colors again - when you do the overview of "shop by Lifestyle" (very nice, by the way), the individual colors on the color bars actually change the colors in the image (this is what I expected for the comment I made 2 minutes ago about the Women's Essential Jacket).

Pants - Photos for the Ultimate Cargo Pants doesn't show the unzipped (shorts) format.

Two comments:
1. It takes a very looong time for the new pages to load (IE6 WinXPpro); once everything loads, there are cool things to see and do, but makes shopping/comparing items too difficult.
2. I really miss the single page feature comparison table for all the products. This was invaluable for me to use every time I have purchased a new vest. I could see which products had the features that I absolutely need vs. the ones I like or could live without. Please bring this back!

I'm not sure if that will affect the overseas shipping rate, but I will look into it for you. Please e-mail me at thomoleary [at] scottevest.com (but replace the [at] with @).

This one has been logged. It seems like the photo feature hangs up a little in FF - we're checking to see if that can be lessened.

Order of colors should definitely match. When implementing the color scroller, there was no way to indicate 'focus' i.e. which one is first without including multiple versions of the whole widget, which would double, triple, etc. the load. So this one was intentional, even if not ideal, but color order should definitely match across all.

Inconsistency: when you click on the links on the left hand side (Jackets & Vests), all the stuff in the dropdown appears on the screen, EXCEPT for Gift Ideas (the Gift Certificates don't appear)and Women's Collection (the unisex items don't appear). I would have my doubts....the only real unisex item you have there is the hat and you could have added the TWiT hat there as well.

We tried a Women's/Unisex combined index, but it was very confusing. As for which products are/are not unisex, we did a photo/video shoot with some models last month and put a lot of thought into which work. The Ultimate Cargo Pants are admittedly a stretch for being unisex, but they are cut wide enough to be comfortable as travel pants for many women. You are correct about the Twit hat belonging there.

Colors again - when you do the overview of "shop by Lifestyle" (very nice, by the way), the individual colors on the color bars actually change the colors in the image (this is what I expected for the comment I made 2 minutes ago about the Women's Essential Jacket).

We may wind up ultimately reverting to this style of presentation for colors... stay tuned....

Pants - Photos for the Ultimate Cargo Pants doesn't show the unzipped (shorts) format.

UCP and HCP photos are probably going to be reshot sometime soon, but that's a good observation about the zip off format... particularly as we're heading into summer.

Thank you everyone, Anonymous and named, for caring enough to take the time to review our site in such detail and comment on it. We are logging every comment and taking everything into consideration to make this the best SeV site ever! Don't be shy!

Hi Dana - thanks for your comments! There's definitely a trade-off between the load time and the 'coolness' of features, but we're not happy with that balance yet and we are working on lightening up the pages.

For the comparison chart, we have a new version here: http://www.scottevest.com/company/comparison_chart.shtml We purposefully pared it down since the other one was chock full of text, columns, etc. Nothing is off the table, so if the demand points to needing this tool (or perhaps an evolved version of it... hmmm...) you may see it again....

Thank you so much for your comments, and please let us know if you have any more!

Thanks Mike! Which browser are you in? IE6, IE7, Firefox? It would help us to narrow down where the bug could be.

I tried this again at home with both FF and IE7 and it seems to work just fine. Looks like it was caused by the proxy server I was behind when I first tried it.

1. On the Evolution Jacket page, under Key Features, the pop-ups all show as "undefined". I am using Firefox 3RC2 and I have a screen shot I can upload if there's a good way to do so.

2. In the menu on the left side of the page, the Tactical 4.0 and related stuff isn't listed except under Sale Items. It seems like you would want to list it under Jackets & Vests as well?

3. Yes, we are reading the page but I don't know how many people will respond to Beuller. :)

4. I REALLY miss seeing pictures to go with the feature descriptions so that I have a sense of where all the little pockets and such are.

Scott, Thom, and team,

Great site! Congratulations!

I like how you have the Reviews tab with the reviews from the magazines. You might consider posting a few customer reviews as well.

I know that you all are INCREDIBLY busy right now, but with all of the extra airline baggage fees and restrictions, you might want to see if you can get a spot on a tv news program (maybe call your people at CNBC again) to show how travellers can actually save money by loading up 1/2 of a carrier on into a Scottevest. I just got back from a trip and enjoyed having my Evolution. It was in the mid-80s F and I have do take off the sleeves and zipper cap to keep from baking, but I got through security with probably 8 lbs of electronics (off course sticking the Evolution through the x-ray). Again, you guys are very busy, but airline baggage fees are a hot topic these days.

I almost forgot. . .for a future vest or light jacket for all your hot climate customers, you might consider adding two zippered vents in the back to help the person cool down faster.

Well, I experienced no real problems in placing my order, but the site was really slow throughout, and I have a high speed DSL connection.

Also it would be nice to offer a "printer friendly" invoice - I always want to print an invoice, and the one I have by "print selection" is right-truncated, so I didn't get the full invoice.

Otherwise, slick, good job!

In the Hidden Cargo Pants "Key Features" description it indicates that the pants has a "Personal Area Network" with "Special collar loops and BudBuckets"

Uh, just how high is the rise on the pants that they have "collar loops?"

Oh, and you can't let your new site debut without having the special "TWIT" discounted apparel section.

With Leo Laporte, Dick DeBartolo, Patrick Norton and even John Dvorak always talking about your products they advertise to a rather large group of tech-savvy electronic gadget carrying individuals through their numerous podcasts.

And just another comment on the small sized jackets. Why is it that the sleeve circumference at the armhole on a small jacket or vest needs to have such a large 24-inch circumference? A two foot circumference armhole on a small jacket or vest is waaay too large.

I mean seriously, if you're wearing a size small and you have a 1 foot diameter arm then somethings not right. My head isn't even a foot wide.

I guess I can tie a knot at the end of the removable sleeve and wear it as a big ol floppy hat if necessary.

Signed,

"I'm not Popeye for cryin out loud!"

I wanted to personally thank everyone for posting their comments here. This was a HUGE help, and I really appreciate it. We have passed on EVERY comment to our web developer to implement. We decided that the cool iTunes like scroller on the product details pages had to go, given all the reported issues, which sucks, but such is life.

Thanks again!

Scott

On the Men's Travel Vest page if you go to the Key Features tab, all of the items act like links but none of them do anything. Also, the links just below the pictures for Videos, Photos, etc... don't do anything. I'm using FF 2.0.0.14.

Hi there - thanks for your help! The Key Features are supposed to function with a rollover, such that it pops-up a little window with a description. Firefox doesn't seem to like this setup, though, and we are sorting out a workaround so that they are clickable to give the same info. Your notes have been logged, and hopefully we'll have everything sorted out this week. Thanks again, and thank you to everyone who has helped us with this QA process! You rock!

We wanted to thank everyone again for your help in identifying the bugs on our new site! This has been an amazing and busy couple of weeks for SeV with the launch, the sale, the video and now moving our warehouse to Chicago. The support of all our fans was amazing, and as always, you challenge us to continually improve ourselves.

The major bugs in the site (so it seems) are traceable back to the very cool, but very problematic "iTunes Scroller" that we used to show product photos. We have decided that it needs to go, and have set up a page design that will replace it. We are hoping that this will fix 95% of all site issues, but would truly appreciate it if we could call upon you to take a quick look and let us know if you see any problems or have any concerns. Just ONE page has been developed (we're heavily testing it now) - http://www.scottevest.com/v3_store/microfleece_pullover_clean.shtml - so please, tell us what you think. Is this an improvement or are we back to the drawing board?

Again… thank you….

Regards,

Scott
