Fashion Vs. Airport Security - BlackBook

Fashion Vs. Airport Security

Fashion Vs. Airport Security
In recent years, a key travel philosophy question has arisen: What's more important, looking good or getting through security quickly? Flying, a glamorous dress-up affair in its early days, has been reduced to Juicy Couture track suits, slip-on shoes, minimal jewelry, and now this. A New York Times piece on dealing with increased security procedures alerts us to the existence of the ultimate sacrifice of form for airport-security-line-function.

Enter the Scottevest, an exciting vest/wearable carry-on bag that allows you to “breeze through security,” or so the website claims. It features 22 pockets to carry everything from your cell phone to your Kindle to your camera. Just load it up, wear it, and the when it’s time to go through security, remove said vest and put it through the X-ray machine. Hmm…

The Scottevest brings up several important questions. Why would you want to “wear” your electronic items versus carrying them in a bag? What does wearing as many as 22 items do for the male or female form? Perhaps if you’re one of those annoying people already packing an oversized wheelie that hogs an entire overhead compartment, then maybe it’s useful to be able to wear another carry-on. But really, this sort of seems like a scary passport necklace that has mutated and taken over the entire torso.
