Apple would have people believe its iPad tablet is the ultimate in mobile computing, but its large screen makes pocketing impossible.
Buzz up!By Andrew Heining / January 27, 2010
Satchel? European men's carry-all? Man-purse? Murse?
Skip to next paragraphHow would you carry your iPad? Apple CEO Steve Jobs began Wednesday's event at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco by emphasizing his company's commitment to mobile devices: "We're the largest mobile device company in the world," he told the assembled press.
Well, no one would argue that the iPad isn't mobile. It's certainly very light, and terribly thin. But it packs a 9.7-inch screen (diagonally measured) in a package that trims the tape at 9.56 by 7.47 inches. Do us a favor: stand up and imagine cramming something that size into your pants pocket. Something tells us you're having a little trouble (and don't be cute and say you're wearing cargo pants – everyone knows no one wears those anymore.)
But seriously. The vision Apple has pitched to the world is one of the iPad always at hand. Sure, it would fit just fine in your carry-on, and slip discretely into a briefcase. But we're mobile people, right? We're not always carrying around baggage. A smart phone makes the quick walk to Starbucks in your pocket, and connects to the WiFi when you get there. But an iPad? Maybe it's an overreaction, but aren't we all going to look like clipboard-wielding camp counselors trying to carry this thing around with us?
Cases? Coats?
The iPhone and its smart phone brethren spawned a whole industry of accessories. "According to Michael Morgan of ABI Research, the global market for 'carrying accessories' – a category that includes belt-clip holsters, leather sleeves, and silicone sheaths, among other products – has grown to $2.1 billion per year," Slate wrote late last year. Laptops owners know the routine as well: buy laptop, buy case, buy screen protector, buy bag.
What will we see for the iPad? Will more companies followScottevest's lead, putting out clothes with built-in hidden pockets for gadgets? (And more importantly, will typical style-conscious Apple customers buy them?) Or will men resort to always wearing a sportcoat and awkwardly cram an iPad into a side pocket?
Check out the device's specs and our iPad topic page.

We’re not much for the high-profile gadget hustle, which is why we’ve given the iPad circus a pretty wide berth this week. But we will say that, as men of style, we’re glad its’ not pocket-sized.
The past couple years have seen a flood of slightly-too-large plastic bricks arrive on the market, each indispensable enough to pose a serious threat the shape of the American pocket. In case you’ve forgotten, we’ll say it again: the less you have in your pants, the better they look. You’re running a risk with anything larger than a RAZR. (Remember those?) But that kind of logic doesn’t do very well against the draw of an iPhone.
Which is why we were happy to see this year’s gamechanger is too large to fit into anything other than a bag. Surely this time around, we could have a gadget that didn’t deform the world’s pant legs or violate any unspoken laws of decorum.
Then, of course, we saw this…

Hi Scott:I am a travel photographer and workshop teacher based in California.I have been looking for the perfect travel jacket for decades and from what I hear, you have designed it. I am taking a group of photographers to Burma at the end of this month and I wonder if you have a demo model that I may be able to test on the trip. I would be delighted to provide you with photographs of the jacket in action. In addition to the workshops I teach, I am also co-chair of the annual Travel Writers and Photographers Conference at the Book Passage in California http://www.bookpassage.com/content.php?id=241 and I am continually looking for products that help travelers.Thank you for your help.Best,Bob Holmes--

While it remains to be seen whether Apple's new iPad tablet will ultimately change the publishing business the way the iPod has changed the landscape of the music industry, the fact that it's essentially an outsize iTouch (which itself is basically an iPhone sans the phone), brings a more immediate and pressing question to light, where, exactly, do you stick it?
I mean, technically speaking it's portable (but then again, so's a bone-in ham). But where, are you going to stash that 71.4-square-inch, pound-and-a half gleaming slab of multimedia ambrosia when it's time to put down your e-version of "Catcher in the Rye" and catch your commuter flight straight home to Nerdvana?
Not to worry. It seems the folks at Scottevest, maker of those 22-pocket travel vests you've seen advertised in the Sky Mall catalogs, have been on the case, and shortly after Steve Jobs announced the tablet and its specifications were revealed, the Sun Valley, Idaho, company threw the above graphic up on its website.
But it didn't require any heavy lifting, says Scottevest's founder and Chief Executive Scott Jordan. It turns out the roomy "PubPocket" (No. 19 of the 22 pockets), originally envisioned as a cargo hold for newspapers, magazines and maps, will easily icommodate the iPad.
"We were keeping a close eye on the dimensions," Jordan told me earlier today. "And that pocket was designed to fit a legal pad which is 8 1/2 by 11 3/4 [inches]." (The iPad specifications have it clocking in at 9.56 by 7.47 inches). "And as soon as Jobs' announcement was over, we started getting phone calls and e-mails. Our new graphic was up about an hour later."
Though iPad won't actually meet iPocket until the device is released next month, Jordan, who says he's stowed his own netbook computer in one of those selfsame pockets, is confident Apple's newest gizmo will be a good fit -- as long as you order a size medium or larger jacket or vest. "A Kindle fits in there perfectly, and that's probably the closet kind of device to what we're talking about with the iPad."
And since you don't need to wait until March, you can order one now (vests run $100, jackets $175 to $250). Which might not be a bad idea since navigating the confines of the neighborhood Starbucks with a pound and a half of technology tucked over your tummy -- no matter how efficiently secreted -- is bound to make you walk a little funny.
I don't know what the inevitably awkward gait will look like, but I sure know what I'm going to call it.
That's right: the iPad shuffle.

The company's CEO said the pocket, originally designed to stow things like magazines, newspapers and maps, can easily accommodate a device with the specs of the newly announced Apple gizmo. SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- AdRoll's RoundTrip, the retargeting solution for brands of all sizes, has found that cross-platform retargeting campaigns deliver better ROI than retargeting on a single network alone. Through integrations with a host of partners, such as Google Ad Exchange, AdBrite, and OpenX, RoundTrip has seen advertisers' cost-per-click decrease while maintaining higher click-thru and conversion rates, resulting in better ROI advertising.
Retargeting is an advertising technique that allows brands to bring back prospective customers who leave a site without purchasing, by showing them ads on other sites they visit later. RoundTrip's large cross-platform inventory pool helps small and medium-sized brands (SMBs) achieve scale in retargeting campaigns and reach their customers more consistently. Access to greater inventory also improves optimization, leading to more cost-effective campaigns.
Cross-platform retargeting campaigns run on RoundTrip have resulted in a 30% cost reduction over retargeting run on a single platform. "Using a single platform to retarget is limiting. When you can expand the reach of a campaign, we see cross-platform results that exceed paid search ROI," said Aaron Bell, AdRoll's CEO. "As the first retargeting solution designed specifically for SMBs, we aim to simplify the process of running cross-platform campaigns and help brands generate sales and increase visibility."
RoundTrip offers cross-platform campaign management and reporting in a single, easy-to-use dashboard. Advertisers can view and optimize campaigns based on ad size, placement, or platform. "Using AdRoll has improved my retargeting results. I see all my results in one place and can watch my CPC drop as I try new platforms," said Scott Jordan, CEO of ScotteVest. "I've used retargeting in the past, but AdRoll's cross-platform solution provides superior results to my earlier experiences, making retargeting simple and profitable for ScotteVest." AdRoll is offering a free two-week retargeting trial to the first two hundred advertisers to sign up.
AdRoll launched in 2006 to create simple, effective advertising solutions for reaching niche and enthusiast audiences. Their product suite includes retargeting, display campaigns, a publisher-rating system that makes sense of ad inventory on tens of thousands of sites, and a buzz-builder tool that allow advertisers to communicate directly with publishers. AdRoll enables advertising on any budget while generating conversions and brand recognition.
