The best travel gifts are those that make getting from here to there easier — not more complicated, less fun or, worst of all, heavier. If it fits in your carry-on, so much the better. Travelers' needs are as varied as their destinations, and so we looked in stores and online for items that would meet the basics, as well as for those cutting-edge gadgets that make travel more interesting, in prices ranging from less than $10 to more than $200. In addition, we're offering a guide to 10 of our favorite books for gift- giving this season. There's no such thing, though — if they have everything we want, they're ridiculously expensive, weigh too much and are too big. Altec Lansing makes this reasonably priced unit, however, and while we might wish for a remote, a clock/alarm or other bells and whistles, if we simply want good sound in a set of speakers compatible with most MP3 players that can be folded up in 2 seconds and easily transported in a carry-on — not to mention a stable cradle — we've found it. Bonus: The Compact gets way louder than most speakers this size while holding onto clarity. Cost: $58 Find it here: amazon.com ZOMM cellphone leash Perfect for: Harried friends, road trippers Why they'll love it: The main purpose of ZOMM is to flash, vibrate and then sound an alarm if you go too far away from your cellphone, which is a selling point for folks who forget their phones a lot — leaving them on restaurant tables, in rest- stop bathrooms, on the hotel nightstand. But because the ZOMM attaches to your keychain, another attractive feature is that it allows you to answer your phone there, using the unit on the keyring — meaning it's an additional hands-free speaker. ZOMM connects to your cell via Bluetooth, and also has a panic button and can call for emergency assistance. Cost: $80 Find it here: zomm.com Fatcat Solar Charger Perfect for: The hopelessly electronically addicted, backpackers Why they'll love it: With 12 tips — including for iPhone, BalckBerry, most MP3 playerss and PDAs — and the ability to charge hand- helds from 4.5 volts to 9 volts, the Fatcat battery pack is pretty versatile, and because it can be charged either by the sun or via an outlet, pretty useful. At 5 1/2 by 3 by 1 inches, the unit is slightly larger than a cellphone and can store two to three times the power needed for one item. Note that it takes the longer end of the range for sun charging, about 8 hours (the instructions say 5-10). Cost: $99.85 Find it here: magellans.com AirTech backpack Perfect for: Everyone who carries a laptop Why they'll love it: Airbak technology just keeps getting better, and in this bag, it means that the air-filled bladder at the bottom of the pack that sits on your lower back better distributes the weight of your electronics, which in turn means a day at the airport is easier on the old bod. Additional features include super-padded shoulder straps, pockets for your phone, sunglasses, water bottles and other gadgets, and a separate, well-padded section for the laptop.
