How 12 CEOs & Founders are Leveraging Web Video

Jul 29, 2010 -

The debate continues on whether CEOs should be fluent in social media or not, but the number of CEOs using social media to engage customers is still very low, even among technology companies.

In the past year it seems that executives have become more comfortable with platforms like Twitter and Facebook. For example, there are a number of influential CEOs using Twitter to represent their companies and bring a friendly face to their businesses. Tweeting CEOs like Tony Hsieh of Zappos andGuy Kawasaki of Alltop are well-known for their successful social presences and large followings as a result.

With all of the talk about how CEOs are getting social, we were curious to see how many CEOs are also branching out into web video. We took a look around the web to see how CEOs and founders are leveraging video to educate and engage consumers.

Once again, we found that the number of executives active in the web video space, as in the social media space, is quite small. But for those business leaders taking an active role, we've uncovered some great successes. Here's a list of 12 CEOs and founders leveraging web video to promote their businesses.

After
Apple launched the iPad, you may have heard the buzz around the iPad suit pocket, in which political faux-pundit Stephen Colbert called out the Wall Street Journal for not including him in an article about ways to carry the iPad. Colbert sported a suit jacket with an iPad-compatible pocket at The Grammys just days before the article was published.

See my 3 Standard Poodles posed in series like William Wegman's Weimaraners

Please see my 3 poodles, Lucy, Chloe, and Margaux, posed similar to William Wegman's Weimaraners.  If you are unfamiliar with William Wegman, see this link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Wegman_%28photographer%29

The pictures were inspired by a similar series done by Wegman.  Our series tells a story and is intended to be hung in order.  First, Lucy is alone and sad.  Then, Chloe joins the party all smiley with Lucy confused and quizzical.  Finally, Margaux joins the picture and everybody is happy.

Now, I am sure you want to know how we go them to sit like this.  Well, they are really on the stools, but only one at a time and we photo-shopped them together. I hope you like it.

Awesome Idea for SCOTTEVEST commercial

Anyone want to give this a try at home?  Seriously, if you are interested in doing this, we'd pay you for your efforts, if it is worthwhile.  Before you procedd, let me know so we can work out the details.

Some thoughts:

Man walks into an airport wearing a Scottevest with a swagger, scoops up a newspaper from a newstand and flips a coin to the newsie kid working there ("Thanks Mister!"), exchanges smiles with a cute stewardess, etc.

VO: "He's got Travel Mojo.  He's smooth, he's quick, he flies through airports the way jets fly through airports and all because he wears SCOTTEVEST..."

At the mention of Scottevest, there's a quick x-ray effect on his clothing showing the gadgets, etc.

Hero breezes through security without even slowing down, with the TSA agents talking behind his back as if he was a ballplayer that just went through.

VO: "But what if we took his Scottevest away?"

Hero's jacket and pants literally disappear from his body and all of the gadgets, keys, documents, coins, etc. drop from where the pockets were holding them to the floor, scattering like marbles everywhere around him.  (Check out this Skittle commercial for a comp of the type of effect I'm thinking about - )  He looks around confused wearing nothing but boxer shorts as he tries to gather up all his stuff.  We could layer additional humor into it by having the flight attendant walk past and turn her nose up at him, and the newsie kid running up, kicking him in the shin and shouting, "Newspapers cost a dollar you cheapskate!"

Hero blinks and it turns out he was dreaming (think the effect is a little cheap?).  He rolls over and sees the Scottevest on a hanger, x-ray effect assures him that it's all ok and it was just a dream.

VO: Delivers whatever button/tagline we decide upon, "Don't lose your travel mojo. Wear Scottevest." or "Don't carry your stuff.  Wear it."

Additional notes:
(VO could be an on-screen narrator ala Rod Serling, but that's a little played out.)

Now we are talking. That's a clever idea!  The key IMHO is that it doesn't take $200k and 3 days of shooting to accomplish something memorable here, it should be based upon the story and editing. Much of what Thom proposes I think can be done on the cheap and be just as compelling.  I watched a TV show recently (I think it was It's always sunny in Philly, but forgot) where they had a scene at airport security. It would be VERY easy to recreate and stage using simple tables, bins, a fake xray thingy, a box where the conveyer belt is. I think it could be done very simply.  They gadgets, etc. could fall using effects in editing. What we are looking for is a cheap but cool effect using editing, and humor in the script, etc.
