APPS MAKE THE MOST OF NEW IPAD

Though most travel-centric apps designed for the iPhone and iPod Touch will work on Apple's iPad as well, here are a few examples aimed at making the most of the new platform:

Flight Control HD ($4.99)

Already a highflying favorite among mobile gamers, the iPad version of this air-traffic-control simulation (you use your fingers to guide planes to safe landings or metal-crunching crashes) adds more maps, better graphics and new multi-player modes.

Lonely Planet's 1,000 Ultimate Experiences ($9.99)

The shortcomings of this digitized coffee-table book include limited photos (only 700 of the 1,000 experiences are illustrated) and the fact that only about 60% of the entries have imbedded links for more info. Still, the visual "wow factor" is notable.

UpNext 3D Cities (Free)

Interactive, 3-D street maps of New York, Austin, Boston and Washington, D.C., let you zoom in to see subway stations and commercial buildings, with links to restaurants, shops and other tenants.

Less than a week after the feverishly hyped launch of Apple's iPad, the touch-based multimedia tablet has been praised as one of the most revolutionary tools for travelers since the airport kiosk — and panned as a cumbersome, underwhelming gadget whose most notable application is that it tags its spendthrift owners as technology lemmings.

In the first camp: InterContinental BuckheadAtlanta's chief concierge, Richard Lara. He's experimenting with the 1 1/2-pound, half-inch-thick computer as a way to convey information and connect with guests on a "more intimate level," whether it's eyeballing a Turner Field seating chart from a lobby couch or perusing restaurant options over a glass of sweet tea in the hotel's courtyard. The Atlanta hotel is one of four InterContinental properties testing iPads for concierge use; pilot hotels are also considering renting them to guests as a "trailblazing" amenity, Lara says.

That portability — the makers of Scottevest travel clothing trumpeted the fact that the iPad is small enough to fit in one of their pockets, and the TSA says fliers can leave it in their carry-ons when they go through airport security — is another appeal for travelers.

And we will undoubtedly see travelers getting creative with some of those exempt items, and could see others adopting pocket-rich clothing.

SCOTTEVEST founder and CEO Scott Jordan called Spirit’s decision “ridiculous and insane,” but acknowledged business will be great “if other airlines are stupid enough to adopt the same program.” The company sells jackets, shirts, vests and other clothing with built-in pockets originally designed to help travelers maximize the one carry-on bag rule.

I am going to be on: FOX Business' "Cavuto" Interview Request

essage ----------
From: Robinson, Michael <

In a first, Spirit Airlines added a $45 fee for carry-on bags‎. This policy, should it catch on, would seem like a great boon for your travel jackets. Could your CEO could be available to talk about the Spirit story and your jackets during a live one-on-one television interview today on Neil Cavuto’s 6 PM ET primetime show?

@jason your review is brilliant and 100% correct My 48 Point iPad Review (after 72 hours)

MSNBC.com just interviewed me about Spirit Airlines new $45 fee for Carry-On Luggage- INSANE

Spirit Air to experiment with carry-on bag fees

NEW YORK
Tue Apr 6, 2010 1:19pm EDT

(Reuters) - Privately held Spirit Airlines said on Tuesday it will start charging as much as $45 for carry-on bags.

U.S.

Spirit said the new charge will help the airline lower base air fares. The fee applies to carry-ons placed in overhead bins, while personal items placed under the seat remain free.

Spirit will charge $45 for these bags at the gate and $30 when paid in advance. Members of Spirit's frequent flier program will be charged $20 for carry-on bags if paid in advance.

The fee applies for travel on August 1 and beyond.

"Bring less; pay less. It's simple," Spirit's Chief Operating Officer Ken McKenzie said in a statement.

So far no other U.S. airline charges for carry-on bags, but major airlines will undoubtedly track consumer response to Spirit's new fee very closely.

"I personally think that would spark a major customer backlash," said S&P analyst Jim Corridore. "The general public is sick and tired of fees. They pay them because they have to."

Spirit's new charge now makes paying airline fees almost unavoidable, because fliers are unlikely to board flights without checked bags or carry-on items, Corridore said.

Still, Corridore added he would not be surprised if another airline tested out this new charge.

U.S. airlines are increasingly relying on new fees -- called ancillary revenue in industry parlance-- to boost their revenue and ultimately influence profits.

Although U.S. consumers have bristled at the slate of new fees airlines have conjured up, major carriers have said they are here to stay and are exploring other charges.

For example, Continental Airlines Inc recently unveiled a charge for exit-row seats.

Morningstar analyst Basili Alukos said charging for a carry-on bag makes sense for airlines because many consumers choose to tote their bags on the plane rather than wait for them at baggage claim. He added that shipping a bag is often more expensive than checking a bag.

"People are always willing to pay for a convenience," Alukos said.
